Sentry Commander PT40

The Sentry Commander PT40 uniquely combines Remote Power Management and Pass-Thru Console Port Access™ into one enclosure and, distinctively, one interface.

The Pass-Thru Port Access integrates secure, in-band and/or out-of-band serial connections to the console ports of up to 4 network devices for remote problem determination. The serial console is the only universal out-of-band management media for all the equipment in the data center. Access servers for remote monitoring and communications for applications such as BIOS configuration, boot-prompt level access or remote configuration. Or, connect to the configuration port (console or auxiliary port) on network equipment such as routers, switches, hubs and access servers.

Remote Power Management control of the PT40’s individual receptacles allows a network manager to power off, power on and reboot network devices from any location via secure telnet, a secure web session or secure out-of-band session. Now the network operations center can eliminate dispatching a field service person for manual intervention. Using Sentry Commander they can quickly restart locked-up remote severs & internetworking devices to ensure that the network is fully operational around the clock.

Field-Replaceable Global Secure Modem

The PT40 features an optional field-replaceable global secure modem that supports 56Kbps operation, Call-Back Security, and remote configuration. It is approved for use in 48 countries. Additionally, the internal modem option and Pass-Thru Port Access can eliminate multiple modems and dial-up lines and the need for an expensive terminal server.

Solution for CPE and Data Center Environments

Especially useful for accessing Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), the PT40 is ideal for servers and routers in remote wiring closets, providing access to both reboot a remote device and connect to its console port to monitor its boot-up process and ensure it returns to an operational state.

The PING command

One additional benefit the PT40 provides is a PING command from the “Sentry:” command prompt that is available through telnet, modem, and serial (RS-232) console sessions. This PING command is useful for basic network diagnostics, such as determining whether network link integrity exists, or whether another device on the local or remote network is responsive. Sentry’s PING command tests end-to-end connectivity by sending an Internet Control Message Protocol echo packet to see if a node or device is online and responding. One of the first steps in troubleshooting a network is to use the generic IP loopback address 'ping 127.0.0.1' to test the local device. Moreover, a network manager might use PING to determine the round-trip time in milliseconds to another device on the network.
